Shared bathrooms can be one of the more unpredictable parts of shared living. While everyone hopes for a simple routine of showers, toothpaste and reasonably clean surfaces, reality sometimes delivers something quite different.
Most people who have lived in a shared house will eventually encounter at least one of these bathroom surprises. Some are mildly confusing, some slightly alarming, and some leave you wondering what exactly happened while you were out.
Here are ten of the worst things you might find in a shared bathroom.
1. Someone else’s hair covering the drain
One of the classic shared bathroom discoveries.
A shower that looks fine at first glance, until you notice a small but unmistakable hair sculpture slowly forming over the drain.
2. An empty toilet roll with no replacement
The shared bathroom equivalent of betrayal. Now you either have to face the humiliation of shuffling to the cupboard to get more, or calling out to your housemate to bring you some.
3. Mystery bottles that belong to no one

Half-used shampoo bottles that have been sitting there for months, but everyone keeps around just in case they need them in an emergency.
4. A towel that clearly belongs to someone else
Especially when you realise it’s the only towel left hanging up.
5. Toothpaste splatters in the sink
The kind that somehow dry overnight and become part of the sink’s permanent landscape.
6. A razor sitting somewhere questionable
For example:
- on the edge of the sink
- balanced on the shower ledge
- mysteriously inside the soap dish
- Or actually on top of your bar of soap.
7. Someone’s laundry soaking in the sink
Which means the sink is now unusable for the foreseeable future. Who needs to wash their hands anyway?
8. An unidentified puddle on the floor
The most unsettling part being that you can’t be entirely sure where it came from.
9. An army of empty product bottles

Conditioner bottles that are technically empty but still living in the shower. For some reason there are about ten and you swear one belonged to a housemate who moved out two years ago.
10. The bathroom bin that has clearly been ignored for too long
The moment when everyone realises someone was supposed to empty it. Now it resembles a mountain that now rivals Everest and balancing a piece of tissue on top risks imminent collapse.
Shared bathrooms rarely stay perfectly organised for long. But if you’ve lived with housemates for any length of time, chances are you’ve encountered at least a few of these surprises along the way.
