How to Make Shared Spaces Feel Calmer

0 comments 52 views

Shared houses can feel chaotic because multiple people use the same space. A few small habits can make shared spaces feel calmer and easier to live in (and can make them much easier to clean).

1. Keep surfaces as clear as possible

Shared tables and counters quickly fill up. Soon you will they’re covered with magazines, letters and someone’s mysterious toenail clippings.

Encourage:

  • keeping personal items in bedrooms
  • returning items after use
  • avoiding “temporary piles”
  • Filing or throwing away any mail

2. Use small organisational systems

Trays, baskets, or containers help shared spaces stay tidy.

For example:

  • tray for remote controls, candles, your housemate’s keys
  • basket for blankets
  • container for shared kitchen items

3. Create small designated areas

This helps avoid the feeling of clutter.

Examples:

  • one shelf for shared mugs
  • basket for mail
  • tray for shared keys

This helps keep everything in place and ensure you’re not frantically looking for something before work, which started 5 minutes ago.

4. Be mindful of noise and timing

Calm spaces are also about behaviour.

Examples:

  • late-night cooking noise
  • loud phone calls
  • music volume
  • Watching tv programmes on full volume

5. Tidy shared spaces before leaving them

A simple habit:

  • Leave the space how you’d like to find it.
  • Tidy as you go

Small resets make a huge difference.

6. Agree a few simple shared expectations

Not strict rules – just shared understanding.

Examples:

  • wipe counters
  • put dishes away
  • clear the table
  • Don’t make loud noises at 4am when everyone else is asleep.

Shared spaces rarely stay perfectly tidy for long, but small habits and simple systems can make them feel calmer and easier for everyone to use.
