How to Organise Your Cupboard in a Shared Kitchen

0 comments 54 views

In shared houses, kitchen cupboards are often limited to a small space for each person. While the cupboard might technically be yours, the kitchen itself is shared, which means how you organise that space can make a big difference to how easy the kitchen is to use.

A well-organised cupboard makes cooking simpler, prevents things from getting lost at the back, and keeps your food contained so it doesn’t slowly spill into other areas of the kitchen.

With a few small adjustments, it’s possible to make even a single cupboard work efficiently. Here are some simple ways to organise your cupboard when you’re sharing a kitchen with others.

1. Keep everything contained within your cupboard

Be a good housemate and avoid slowly invading other people’s cupboards. Yes, you may really need to store that 3kg bag of rice you just bought, but placing it on top of your housemate’s mug collection is unlikely to win you any brownie points.

Try to keep your items compact and within your cupboard space. That also means avoiding storing things on kitchen counters or tables when possible.

2. Use small trays or baskets

This is one of the best cupboard strategies. It allows you to group similar items, and you can easily remove everything to clean your cupboard. For example, you might want to group your spices, snacks or breakfast items.

3. Stack vertically where possible

Many cupboards waste vertical space and it can be really valuable if you know how to use it correctly.

Helpful solutions include:

  • shelf risers
  • stacking tins
  • clear containers
  • mug hooks
  • Stackable mugs

This can double usable space without actually increasing the size of your cupboard.

4. Decant bulky packaging

Your cupboard can fill up quickly with packets that are bulky. Such as cereal boxes, pasta or rice.

Clear jars or containers make everything:

  • easier to stack
  • easier to see
  • more compact

5. Keep everyday items at the front

In small cupboards, things easily disappear, or in your quest to retrieve a porridge sachet at 6am you end up knocking several glass jars out of your cupboard.

A simple rule that helps keeping things organised is being mindful on where you place things:

  • everyday ingredients → front
  • occasional ingredients → back

This prevents cupboard digging.

6. Do occasional resets

Your cupboard will feel packed really quickly, and some of the items in there will be duplicates or clutter.

Try practising the below suggestions to make sure all the things in your cupboard are fresh and up to date.

  • quick monthly tidy
  • removing empty packets
  • checking expiry dates

In shared kitchens, cupboards rarely stay perfectly organised forever. But a simple system can make everyday cooking easier and prevent your cupboard from becoming the sort of place where packets quietly disappear behind stacks of tins – and you somehow end up with four jars of peanut butter.
